The City of Surrey says it will be removing derelict boats from the Nicomekl River this month.
The city says boats have been illegally mooring on a narrow section of the river, dumping raw sewage and garbage into the water, and creating hazards for other boaters.
The cleanup effort is being conducted in partnership with Transport Canada.
Mayor Brenda Locke says the river has many spots where boats can legally drop anchor and there's no reason for boaters to illegally moor their vessels.
British Columbia has introduced legislation that would allow people to get independent advice about their rights after they've been involuntarily detained for treatment of a severe mental health disorder. The province's Mental Health Act allows those in crisis to be treated for their own protection, or the protection of others.

Frontline officers arrived on scene to find an injured man suffering from alleged gunshot wounds. Patrol members located a 16 year old victim receiving medical treated by school staff. The youth was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries which included a significant laceration to his head, and suspected concussion and broken arm.
