Despite sore joints, aching muscles, hockey players set new record for longest game

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 Feb, 2015 10:24 AM

EDMONTON — A group of sore, exhausted but happy players in the Edmonton region have set a new unofficial record for the world's longest hockey game.

About 40 skaters slugged it out for 250 straight hours through a mix of weather conditions and some injuries at a rink east of the city to establish the new mark Monday afternoon.

Judges from Guinness World Records will review footage of the game before the 10 days of competition can be officially entered in the books.

The players, who were backed up by several volunteers, also raised more than $800,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Organizer Brent Saik says support throughout the two-team competition was overwhelming.

This is the fifth time the event has been held, with the previous record of 246 hours and two minutes set in southern Alberta three years ago. (CHED)
