Driving Home The ‘Back To School’ Message

Darpan News Desk, 03 Sep, 2019 04:42 PM

With the ‘Back to School’ season upon us, Surrey RCMP is looking to ‘drive home’ the message that speeding and unsafe driving behaviors in school and playground zones are unacceptable.

On September 3, 2019, students across the Surrey School District will be starting a new year of study and the aim of the Surrey RCMP Traffic Enforcement Unit is to ensure those students are safe while they travel to and from school.

Over the summer break, traffic enforcement officers have engaged in targeted projects to combat unsafe driving and speeding. One such two-day project was on August 27-28, in the 19300-block of 88 Avenue after the public reported ongoing unsafe driving behaviors in a playground zone. In less than 6 hours, our officers handed out 70 violation tickets (6 of which were for excessive speeding) and one suspended driver had their vehicle impounded.

The results from this enforcement project are a stark indication of the unacceptable driving behaviors that can be present in our school and playground zones. said Sergeant Ian MacLellan, Surrey Traffic Services Commander. Our members will be enforcing school zone speed limits and it is my sincere hope that we see all drivers respect the rules of the road for the safety of our children.

Surrey RCMP is a partner in Vision Zero Surrey. Vision Zero Surrey provides the framework for a holistic approach to road safety and strives to have Zero people killed or seriously injured on our roads. It's about collective action to protect our most vulnerable road users. As students head back to school, we all have a role to play in keeping kids safe.

Anyone who observes unsafe driving behaviors in school or playground zones, or anywhere on the roadway is encouraged to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
