  • Emergency department reopens after man shot dead by police in B.C. hospital

The Fraser Health authority says the emergency department at a Hope, B.C., hospital that was temporarily closed after a fatal police shooting has reopened.

The department shut its doors Wednesday so that B.C.'s police watchdog could investigate what Mounties called an "interaction" between officers and a man at Fraser Canyon Hospital that ended with one officer firing their gun.

Police say the man received immediate medical attention but was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP were initially called to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 5, where multiple people had sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital.

They say a fight broke out between two of the injured people, resulting in BC Emergency Health Services staff requesting police help.

The health authority says in a statement that no patients, staff or medical personnel were physically harmed, but supports are in place to help with anyone potential mental health repercussions of what it called a "deeply distressing incident."
