Ex-Uber Driver Mohmamed Ben Azaza Hiding In Quebec Faces Extradition To California On Rape Charge

The Canadian Press, 14 Aug, 2018 11:41 AM
MONTREAL — U.S. authorities are seeking to extradite a former Uber driver who was being investigated on rape charges and vanished before turning up in Quebec earlier this summer.

Court documents filed in Montreal say Mohmamed Ben Azaza is wanted in California, but didn't show up for a meeting with investigators in San Francisco in early March.

The Tunisian-born Ben Azaza was being investigated for an alleged sexual assault involving an intoxicated 19-year-old passenger in October 2017.

Montreal police detained him after he filed a complaint about the theft of his identification papers.

U.S. authorities believe Ben Azaza is an imminent flight risk and that extradition is necessary because he may be removed from Canada to Tunisia, which has no extradition treaty with the United States.

The 38-year-old Ben Azaza is currently detained and faces an extradition hearing before a Quebec judge next month.
