Federal Government Announces Funding For Long-awaited Iqaluit Port

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 30 Jul, 2015 04:37 PM
  • Federal Government Announces Funding For Long-awaited Iqaluit Port
IQALUIT, Nunavut — The federal government has announced funding for a long-awaited small-craft harbour in Iqaluit.

Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq says Ottawa plans to provide up to $64 million for the project.

Iqaluit has no port and supplies shipped by sea have to be unloaded on the city's beach.

Only one of Nunavut's 25 communities currently has a port, even though they're all on the ocean.

A proposal for ports in the territory has been floating around the government since 2006.

Sources say a federal election is expected to be called this weekend and Conservative ministers are appearing coast to coast to make funding

announcements.
