Fishy Business: Tensions Between Old, New Hill Security Spill Onto Social Media

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 16 Jun, 2016 12:47 PM
OTTAWA — Some fishy business between Parliament Hill security staff has some officers being threatened with disciplinary action over social media comments about a photo of their new uniforms.

It's the latest manifestation of tensions between the historic House of Commons security force and the RCMP, who were merged into one unit after the 2014 attack on Parliament Hill.

The force will debut their new uniforms on Friday and a promotional photo was posted in their communications centre superimposed with images from the Disney movie "Finding Dory."

That prompted comments on social media including "we are now officially a Mickey Mouse organization."

The postings drew a sharp rebuke from management, which sent a harsh memo this week saying public forums are not to be used to vent or defame the parliamentary protective service.

Several officers, including some who were on the Hill on the day of the attack, are now being called before a committee to explain their comments and could face punishment raging from a verbal warning to suspension.
