Flight returns to Toronto airport after passenger makes direct threat to blow up plane

  • Flight returns to Toronto airport after passenger makes direct threat to blow up plane
Sunwing flight 772 was diverted back to Toronto's Pearson International Airport after a passenger made a "direct threat" to blow up the air plane.

The passenger has been identified as Ali Shahi, 25, and was taken into custody upon landing.

The flight had departed for Panama Friday morning but was directed back to Pearson 45 minutes later.

"The aircraft turned approximately 45 minutes into the flight over West Virginia when an agitated customer made a direct threat against the aircraft," Janine Chapman, Sunwing spokesperson said in a media release.

The plane made a safe landing at the airport at around 8:55 a.m. where authorities took over the scene.

The flight had 183 passengers on board — including two infants — and a crew of six.

All passengers are reported safe and will be boarded into another flight later in the day.

"Sunwing is providing customers with complimentary meals and other assistance while they await the official start of their vacation," Chapman said.

Two aircrafts have required emergency landing at Pearson this week including a WestJet plane leaving for Hamilton from Calgary.
