Gabriel Klein, Accused In Abbotsford School Stabbing Breaks Silence In Court, Told He Has A Lawyer

The Canadian Press, 21 Nov, 2016 12:20 PM
CHILLIWACK, B.C. — A man accused in a deadly stabbing at a British Columbia high school has broken his courtroom silence after rebuffing previous attempts by court officials and lawyers to engage with him.

Gabriel Klein responded to questions from a judge during an appearance in B.C. Supreme today after refusing to engage with the legal system since his arrest on Nov. 1.

The 21-year-old man last appeared in court by video two weeks ago, where he remained mute and motionless when addressed by a sheriff, a lawyer and a judge.

Klein faces one charge each of second-degree murder and aggravated assault after he allegedly entered an Abbotsford high school and attacked two female Grade 9 students.

Klein appeared in court in an oversized red correctional outfit and chewed his fingernails while sitting in the prisoner's box in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack.

He told the judge he understood the proceeding after it was explained to him that a lawyer had agreed to take his case and that he would return to provincial court next week.
