Game On: Toronto City Council Lifts Ban On Street Hockey On City Roads

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 15 Jul, 2016 12:59 PM
  • Game On: Toronto City Council Lifts Ban On Street Hockey On City Roads
Toronto's city council has voted to lift a ban on street hockey in the city, scoring a win for fans of the popular community sport.

Street hockey is welcomed in many other major cities but was prohibited by Toronto's city bylaws for safety reasons.

Earlier this week, Ontario's new minister of children and youth services sent an open letter to city councillors asking that they vote to strike down the ban.

City staff wanted council to keep the prohibition in place, citing safety and possible liability if anyone gets hurt or if private property is damaged.

But at a city council meeting on Friday, the majority of councillors voted to scrap the street hockey ban.

Toronto Mayor John Tory lauded the vote, tweeting "Game on! City Council has lifted ban on street hockey. Hockey is Canada."
