  • High profile Surrey lawyer Narinder Pal Singh Kang suspended by Law Society

A hearing panel of the Law Society has ordered that a well respected Surrey lawyer Narindar Pal Singh Kang, Queen's Counsel be suspended for 2 months and be issued a fine of $1000, starting on July 1, 2021.

In a ruling on Tuesday, the June 15, 2018, domestic violence incident involving Kang as “intimate partner violence.” On that day, Kang got into a heated argument with a person, identified as A.B. in the ruling, after the lawyer had returned home from a social outing where he had drank alcohol.

The argument escalated into violence and ended with Kang grabbing A.B.’s arms and legs and striking A.B. “two or three times” to the back of the head.

According to the ruling, “Throughout the altercation, (Kang) used profane and verbally abusive language. The police attended after A.B. called 911. A.B. was not injured as a result of the altercation“.

Kang was charged with assault and mischief in relation to a domestic altercation, which led to an imposition of a common law peace bond imposed for 6 months. He reported the criminal charge to the Law Society and admitted that his actions constituted conduct unbecoming the profession.

In determining the disciplinary action, the panel considered the serious nature of intimate partner violence, as well as character reference letters provided by Kang, his acknowledgement of his actions and remorse, and the range of penalties in similar cases.

Kang is the founder of the law firm Kang & Company which has locations in Surrey, Calgary, and Montreal.
