Hurricane Gonzalo storms towards southeastern Newfoundland, flooding possible

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 Oct, 2014 10:55 AM

HALIFAX - The Canadian Hurricane Centre says hurricane Gonzalo is accelerating towards Newfoundland, with the possibility of making landfall in the southeastern tip of the province Sunday morning.

The centre says that region of the Avalon Peninsula could see flooding as the storm's arrival may coincide with high tide, warning that there could be storm surges in Cape Race and Trepassey.

Forecaster Chris Fogarty says as it approaches the province, Gonzalo may bring hurricane-force winds to the area of the Hibernia offshore oil platform.

Fogarty says there is about a 50 per cent chance that the storm makes landfall.

Regardless, a complicating factor is a separate cold front that could bring heavy rains to southeastern Newfoundland.

The Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia can also expect high ocean swells as the storm races through North Atlantic waters.

Hurricane Gonzalo, a Category 4 storm packing sustained winds of between 210 and 249 kilometres per hour, is barrelling towards Bermuda.
