  • Jain Centre of BC Celebrates Diwali with Community, Culture, and Reflection

The Jain Centre of British Columbia proudly hosted its annual Diwali celebration on October 17th at the Grand Empire Banquet Hall in Surrey, bringing together families, community leaders, and dignitaries for an evening of cultural richness and spiritual reflection.

The event featured vibrant cultural performances, devotional prayers, and messages of unity and service. It was attended by members of the local Jain community and South Asian leaders, along with representatives from the BC NDP Government, including Premier David Eby, MLA Garry Begg, Amna Shah, Jessie Sunner, Jagrup Brar, and Raj Chouhan. Their presence underscored the Jain community’s enduring contributions to British Columbia’s cultural and spiritual landscape.

For the Jain community, Diwali holds profound spiritual significance as it commemorates the Nirvana (Enlightenment) of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and final Tirthankara of Jainism. His teachings on non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), compassion, and self-discipline continue to guide millions around the world toward ethical living and spiritual liberation.

Diwali for Jains is not only a festival of light but also a time for introspection and renewal. It symbolizes the triumph of knowledge over ignorance and the eternal light of the soul, freed from attachment and desire. The celebration also marks the beginning of the Jain New Year (Vira Nirvana Samvat), a time to reaffirm vows of peace, forgiveness, and harmony.

The Jain community in BC continues to play a vital role in promoting interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and community service—values deeply rooted in Jain philosophy. Their commitment to compassion for all living beings and sustainable living inspires broader conversations on peace, coexistence, and ethical responsibility.
