Latest Drug Overdoses In Winnipeg May Be Fentanyl-Related: Police

  • Latest Drug Overdoses In Winnipeg May Be Fentanyl-Related: Police
WINNIPEG — Police in Winnipeg say three people who died of a drug overdose may be the latest victims of a rise in the use of fentanyl.

Police found the bodies of one man and two women inside a home in the city's northwest early Wednesday morning, along with a white powder.

Const. Rob Carver said police suspect the powder may be the synthetic opioid fentanyl or its much-more powerful cousin carfentanil.

He said it will take a few weeks for lab results to confirm.

The drugs are so powerful, they can be fatal even in small doses and have been linked to a sharp rise this year in drug-related deaths.

The city's firefighters' union said Winnipeg is facing a fentanyl crisis and first responders are dealing with multiple overdoses every day.
