Man, 31, Charged With Fraud In Alleged Tragically Hip Online Ticket Scam

The Canadian Press, 12 Sep, 2016 12:08 PM
KINGSTON, Ont. — A southwestern Ontario man is facing a fraud charge for allegedly advertising Tragically Hip tickets online and not delivering the product.

Police say a Kingston, Ont., man responded to a Kijiji ad for four tickets back at the end of June and sent $1,200 to the supposed seller — who was to send online e-tickets — but the complainant alleges no tickets were received.

Kingston police say investigators identified a suspect from information supplied by the complainant and an arrest warrant was issued.

On Sept. 9, a 31-year-old man — already before the courts on earlier charges of fraud and uttering a forged document — visited Waterloo Regional Police as per conditions on his recognizance and was recognized as the person wanted in Kingston.

Officers picked up the Woolwich, Ont., man in Kitchener that night and returned him to Kingston where he has been charged with fraud under $5,000.

Police say a restitution order has been submitted to the courts requesting the accused reimburse the Kingston resident for his loss of $1,200.

The Tragically Hip played their final concert in Kingston last month to mark the end of their 15-city "Man Machine Poem" tour.

Lead singer Gord Downie announced earlier this year that he has terminal brain cancer.
