Man Charged With Arson After Fire In Police, Fire Building In Delta, B.C.

DELTA, B.C. — A man accused of starting a fire in the public safety building in Delta, B.C., is facing three arson charges.
 
 
Police say a man walked into the building on Saturday afternoon, set fire to two couches in the lobby and then started a fire on the front counter.
 
 
Civilian staff were present during the incident, but were behind safety glass, and there were also police officers and firefighters inside the building.
 
 
Police say they quickly arrested a suspect and 30-year-old Corey Tavares faces three charges including causing damage by fire, and possession of incendiary material for the purpose of committing an offence.
 
 
Tavares remains in custody and his next court appearance is on Wednesday.
 
 
The public safety building sustained smoke, fire and water damage and remains closed to the public while the destruction is assessed.
