A gunman was shot dead by police at a Toronto-area courthouse after he shot and wounded an officer. The incident that occurred near the building's front entrance had Const. Mike Klarenbeek, a 30-year-old police veteran providing security at the courthouse, wounded.

Klarenbeek is now in a "stable condition," as per news reports.

The episode took place when a man entered the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse and fired a gun.

"Const. Mike Klarenbeek suffered a gunshot wound and the male party is deceased," said Staff Sgt. Dan Richardson. He also mentioned that the shooter was from Brampton.

The case is now under investigation by the Ontario police watchdog, which stated that the shooter was hit by other police officers and pronounced dead at the scene.

A lockdown was in effect at the courthouse shortly after the shooting.
