Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger cancels cabinet meeting as trouble brews

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 28 Oct, 2014 10:59 AM

WINNIPEG - Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger cancelled a cabinet meeting Tuesday as he faces growing questions about his political future.

Selinger has not made any public appearances or agreed to media interviews since Monday, when some long-time New Democrats said he should consider resigning.

Becky Barrett, a former cabinet colleague, has said that Selinger has to consider whether to quit in the wake of ongoing low poll numbers.

Municipal Government Minister Stan Struthers says Selinger needs to reflect on public discontent over last year's sales tax increase.

Finance Minister Jennifer Howard says politicians always need to pay attention to concerns raised by senior party officials, such as Barrett.

Selinger has, until now, been adamant about running in the next election, slated for April 2016.

His press secretary says there are no immediate plans for Selinger to have a news conference, but some type of media availability may be announced later.
