Manitoba Tory Says Cabinet Minister Called Him 'Fascist' In Legislature

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 18 Nov, 2015 12:31 PM
WINNIPEG — A Manitoba member of the legislature says he was called a "fascist" by an NDP cabinet minister.

Reg Helwer, who is of German descent, says he was responding to the government's throne speech on Tuesday when Municipal Affairs Minister Drew Caldwell heckled him.

The remark was not recorded in Hansard.

Helwer told the legislature the insult is unacceptable and has damaged his reputation.

Caldwell did not immediately respond to the allegation, but house leader Dave Chomiak apologized to the legislature on Caldwell's behalf.

Chomiak characterized the word as reprehensible and said it is not appropriate for anyone to be called that in the legislature.
