Metal Flies Off Truck, Smashes Through Newfoundland Woman's Windshield

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 01 Dec, 2016 01:18 PM
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A Newfoundland motorist was stunned Thursday when a heavy piece of metal flew off a nearby truck and into her windshield.

Authorities say the large piece of metal, estimated to weigh about 10 to 12 kilograms, struck the car as it travelled on Waterford Bridge Road in St. John's during a morning drive.

The woman's partner, who was on the scene, says she could have been killed.

But Sgt. Dave Hutchings of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the woman is very lucky — her injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

He says the metal appears to be a leaf spring that flew off the back of a truck.

Photographs from the scene show a hole in the middle of the windshield, about where the rear-view mirror hangs, and a long piece of rusted metal.
