Montreal Man, 80, Charged With First-degree Murder In Wife's Death

    MONTREAL — An 80-year-old Montreal man has been charged with first-degree murder and arson in the death of his spouse.
     
    Salomon Abeassis appeared briefly before a Quebec court judge today after being escorted to the prisoner's box in a wheelchair.
     
    He has been ordered detained at least until the case resumes Oct. 17.
     
    His 75-year-old wife died in hospital after a fire in their residence.
     
    Abeassis is prohibited from talking to two women and their spouses.
     
    He identified the women as his daughters.
