More Heat On Manitoba Star Candidate Wab Kinew As Social Media Comments Surface

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 11 Mar, 2016 11:55 AM
WINNIPEG — Manitoba Liberals are demanding Premier Greg Selinger dump one of his star candidates from the upcoming provincial election campaign.

The Liberals say social media comments by Wab Kinew, a well-known author and broadcaster, are demeaning to women, gays and lesbians.

Earlier this week, tweets by Kinew dating back to 2009 came to light.

The comments made fun of fat women, called a sport "gay" and appeared to make light of troubles on a reserve in northern Ontario.

Kinew has already apologized for other questionable remarks — slurs against women and gays in lyrics he wrote as a rap artist a decade ago.

The NDP have stood by Kinew, saying he turned his life around a few years ago and acknowledged his past mistakes in a memoir he published last year.

Kinew is running for the governing New Democrats in the Fort Rouge constituency in Winnipeg. He faces Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari and Progressive Conservative candidate Audrey Gordon.

The election is slated for April 19 and the official campaign is expected to start next week.
