Nanaimo Tent City Ordered To Shut Down Within 21 Days

The Canadian Press, 21 Sep, 2018 05:35 PM
NANAIMO, B.C. — A British Columbia Supreme Court judge has given people living in a tent city in Nanaimo 21 days to vacate land owned by the municipality.

In a written judgment, Justice Ronald Skolrood says all the campers must leave the site in the city's downtown and remove all personal property, structures, tents, shelters, shopping carts, stoves, rubbish and personal chattels.

He also says the group must refrain from re-entering the property without permission from the city.

After 21 days, Skolrood's ruling says the city is authorized to remove everything in the encampment without recourse.

The camp was set up in May by activists to pressure the city to deal with housing issues.

Last month, hundreds of people held rallies for and against the camp. (Nanaimo News Now)
