Nejib Belhaj-Chtioui Pleads Guilty In Montreal To Two Terrorism-related Charges

The Canadian Press, 21 Jul, 2015 10:58 AM
MONTREAL — A man who was charged in connection with the terrorism hoax section of the Criminal Code pleaded guilty on Monday.

Nejib Belhaj-Chtioui was sentenced to 20 months in prison and, with time served, has eight months left.

He was detained upon his arrival from Tunisia at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport last December.

A Quebec judge denied Belhaj-Chtioui bail in January, ruling he could pose a serious threat to public safety and national security.

He previously pleaded not guilty to the two charges: conveying information and committing an act to cause reasonable concern that it is connected to a terrorist activity.

Authorities have said the charges are related to something Belhaj-Chtioui posted online a few years ago, but have declined to be more specific.
