New Brunswick Judge To Decide Today Whether To Grant Dennis Oland Bail

The Canadian Press, 17 Feb, 2016 10:47 AM
FREDERICTON — Dennis Oland will learn today if he'll walk out of a Fredericton courthouse free on bail, or go to prison to await the appeal of his second-degree murder conviction.

Oland was sentenced last week to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years in the 2011 bludgeoning death of his father, Richard Oland.

Justice Marc Richard is expected to deliver his decision on bail after hearing arguments from the defence and Crown last week.

Defence lawyer Alan Gold argued Oland is willing to abide by all conditions and that his client's mother and uncle are willing to post $400,000 surety.

The Crown made the argument that it's not in the public's interest to have a convicted murderer released into the community unless there are exceptional circumstances.

There have been only 21 cases in Canada where convicted murderers have been granted bail while awaiting appeal.
