North Okanagan Debris Torrent In 2014 May Have Been Caused By Humans

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 19 Nov, 2015 10:52 AM
ENDERBY, B.C. — Provincial officials are searching for whoever may have caused a destructive debris flood in British Columbia's north Okanagan.

Dale Lake, east of Enderby, spilled its banks in May 2014, causing logs and mud to roar down Cooke Creek, damaging a bridge, power lines, and destroying part of Mabel Lake Road.

The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, a community-run salmon hatchery and environmental education facility, was also badly damaged.

A Ministry of Forests investigation has found signs that the debris torrent was caused by someone who have tampered with the culverts at Dale Lake, possibly to maintain the level of the lake for fishing or boating.

The ministry is asking anyone with information to come forward.

A conviction for causing environmental damage as a result of tampering with culverts on Crown land carries fines of up to $100,000. (CKIZ)
