One Student In Critical Condition After School Bus Crash In Northern Alberta

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 02 Dec, 2019 09:10 PM

SMOKY LAKE, Alta. - More than a dozen students were sent to hospital, one in critical condition, after a school bus and a truck-mounted crane collided on an Alberta highway.

RCMP say the crash happened at about 8:30 a.m. Monday near Smoky Lake, about 115 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

Authorities say one student was airlifted from the scene in critical condition and another was transported by ambulance to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the driver of the crane was taken to hospital with minor injuries and a passenger in the vehicle was not injured.

Ross Hunter, a spokesman for Aspen View Public Schools, says 15 students were on the bus at the time of the collision, plus the bus driver.

Hunter says a second bus dispatched to the scene transported other students and the driver to the Smoky Lake Healthcare Centre for further assessment.

"Families of all students involved in the collision have been notified," Hunter says in a statement Monday. "Supports for students and staff are in place at H.A. Kostash School."

RCMP say Redwater Victim Services is also assisting.

They say Smoky Lake RCMP, along with a RCMP Collision Analyst, are still on the scene.
