COQUITLAM, B.C. - Coquitlam RCMP say a British Columbia man who was on the run, allegedly trying to evade sentencing for a separate crime, is now back in custody.

Police say members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrested 25-year-old Arjun Purewal on Tuesday at a Surrey home as they followed leads related to a separate murder in Richmond.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Purewal late last month after he removed the ankle monitor he was wearing while on bail.

He was awaiting sentencing for his part in a 2021 kidnapping in Richmond when he was last seen in Coquitlam on Aug. 26.

Coquitlam RCMP described him as dangerous as they announced the warrant for his arrest.

Police say homicide detectives recognized Purewal and arrested him, and he remains in custody awaiting a court appearance.

The scam was first reported to VPD on January 12, when a west-side couple in their 70s received a call from a man who claimed their nephew had been in a car accident and needed $8,000 to get out of jail. The fraudster then came to the victims’ home and picked up the money.
