Ontario University Hockey Team Changes It's Offensive Name, Destroys Jerseys After Complaint

  • Ontario University Hockey Team Changes It's Offensive Name, Destroys Jerseys After Complaint
LONDON, Ont. — An Ontario university hockey team has changed its name and destroyed their jerseys after a student complained about the team's name.

The co-ed team of law students at Western University was called Dixon Cider — a name that the dean of the university's faculty of law says isn't immediately clear that it's offensive until it is spoken aloud.

Iain Scott says his staff dealt with the issue after learning about the name on Nov. 19.

The team has since changed its name to the Crash Test Domi's.

Scott says he met with the members of the team shortly thereafter — and they profusely apologized.

"It's regrettable, the students are ashamed, I'm very disappointed, but we intend to use this in a positive way," Scott said.

He said his assistant dean met with student leaders this week to discuss a way forward.

"I want students to understand that if any student feels uncomfortable in any way about anything, it's important we know about it," he said.
