Ontario's St. Lawrence College Investigating Homophobic Comment On Social Media

The Canadian Press, 21 Jul, 2015 10:56 AM
TORONTO — An Ontario college says it has launched an investigation after receiving a complaint about homophobic comments one of its professors allegedly posted on social media.

A spokeswoman for St. Lawrence College says the school is looking into comments allegedly made on Facebook.

Kelly Wiley says the online comments were "deeply concerning" to the college and necessitated an immediate investigation.

Screenshots of an alleged post by professor Rick Coupland circulating on social media purport to show him sharing a link to a story about a rainbow flag being raised in St. Petersburg, Fla., accompanied with the comment "It's the queers they should be hanging, not the flag."

The Facebook account appeared to have been deleted by Tuesday.

Coupland, who is a business professor with the college, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

St. Lawrence College, which has campuses in Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston, says the comments are not a reflection of its values.

It said it has strict policies which guide the conduct of its employees.
