OPP Issue Warning About Email 'Phishing' Scam That Targets iTunes Users

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 08 Jan, 2016 11:27 AM
NORFOLK COUNTY, Ont. — Provincial police are warning people to be aware of an email scam that targets iTunes users.

Police say they received a call earlier this week from a concerned person who had received an email claiming to be from iTunes.

The email legitimately appeared to be from the provider and indicated that the user's iTunes account had been charged $50 and they could apply for a refund.

The person clicked a link that was provided in the email, at which time personal and credit card information was updated, but they called police after realizing the information had been forwarded to a different web site address.

The OPP is reminding people to be vigilant when they receive an email requesting personal and financial information.

Police say the scam is called "phishing" and comes from the analogy that scammers are using email lures to "fish" for passwords and financial data from the sea of Internet users.
