Ottawa Man Jesse Mooney Charged With Assault With A Knife In Parliament Hill Security Incident

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 24 Jul, 2018 12:35 PM
  • Ottawa Man Jesse Mooney Charged With Assault With A Knife In Parliament Hill Security Incident

On Sunday, July 22, at approximately 7:20am, Frontline officers responded to a call for service for an injured 32 year old male who was involved in an altercation with a male known to him.

On a walking path near the 4000 block of Bridle Path, two males got into a verbal argument. The male suspect unprovoked swung at the victim with a closed fist. The suspect then fled the area. The victim, noticing that he had a cut to his hand immediately called 911 when he realized the male hit him with a knife. Ottawa Paramedics assessed the victim and transported him to a local hospital.

Officers did a search of the area with negative results for the suspect. A description was provided to officers of the 24 year old suspect as well as a photo.

On Monday morning, the male suspect was arrested by Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) and RCMP following a separate incident that happened on Parliament Hill. The male who was removed from Parliament Hill was handed over to the Ottawa Police Service.

Jesse MOONEY, 24 years old of Ottawa, is charged with the following in relation to the Bridle Path incident:

Assault with a weapon

Possession of a weapon

Assault causing bodily harm

Fail to comply with a probation order

As confirmed on July 23rd MOONEY was charged with Assault and Breach of Probation in relation to the Hill incident.

During the brief appearance, Jesse Mooney, 24, yelled at the judge overseeing the hearing, demanded his lawyer be fired and complained about the government.

Mooney and the judge were speaking over one another during the video hearing for four charges stemming from an alleged altercation on Sunday — the day before he was arrested on Parliament Hill.

Parliamentary security officers detained Mooney during the Changing of the Guard ceremony Monday on the Hill.

Authorities say a small pocket knife was discovered nearby.

Police say Mooney is being charged with assault and breach of probation in relation to the Hill incident, but he has yet to appear before a judge on those charges.
