Outside monitor sought for autopsies of Winnipeg's storage locker babies

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Oct, 2014 11:00 AM

WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg woman accused of concealing the bodies of six babies has made her first court appearance.

Andrea Giesbrecht (GEEZ'-brehk) appeared Thursday via video from the jail where she has been held since her arrest earlier this week.

Dressed in a plain grey shirt, Giesbrecht did not speak as her lawyer, Greg Brodsky (BRAWD'-skee), asked for changes to the autopsies of the six babies.

Brodsky wants an independent pathologist to monitor the autopsies as they are conducted by a medical examiner.

He says it's a complex case and determining the ages of the infants, their identities and how they died are all important issues.

The bodies were found Monday in a storage locker, which police say was rented by Giesbrecht.

Brodsky says there will be further discussions with the Crown before a decision is made on how the autopsies will be done.
