ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador's new Progressive Conservative leader has been sworn in as the province's 12th premier.

Paul Davis became the leader of the governing Tories at a convention two weeks ago.

Davis served in cabinet before stepping down to seek the leadership.

The 53-year-old former police officer defeated two other former cabinet ministers, Steve Kent and John Ottenheimer, for the job.

He must call an election within 12 months of taking office.
