Plainclothes Surrey RCMP Officers Nab Robbery Suspect

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 23 Jun, 2016 11:11 AM

Surrey RCMP has arrested and charged a robbery suspect who picked the wrong time and the wrong place to commit such a crime.

On June 16th, 2016 at 1:50pm, several on-duty Surrey RCMP plainclothes officers were in the 10600 block of King George Boulevard in an unmarked police car.

The officers were alerted to an armed robbery in progress at a retail store in the area. Officers saw a male matching the suspect’s description fleeing on a bicycle and gave chase.

The suspect eventually abandoned his bicycle and continued fleeing on foot with police close behind. Police captured the suspect in a nearby green space. While trying to escape, the suspect dropped a black replica handgun.

The male suspect has been identified as 47 year old Mark SUTHERLAND of Surrey. SUTHERLAND has been charged with Robbery, Disguising face with intent to commit offence, and Use imitation firearm while committing an indictable offence. SUTHERLAND remains in custody pending his next court appearance.

At any given time, our plainclothes officers are active around the city following up on any number of investigations and special enforcement projects, says Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann. Dunlop. Most of the time the public won’t even realize they are there, but they certainly do enhance community safety and complement our uniformed officers by responding to emerging crimes when appropriate.
