Plant a tree for $20: Surrey’s popular sale returns in August

  • Plant a tree for $20: Surrey’s popular sale returns in August

The City of Surrey’s popular online tree sales are back this summer, with the next sale set for Aug. 13 and quality trees available for just $20.

Late summer and early fall are ideal for tree planting, so residents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to enhance their yards and play a direct role in growing the City’s urban forest.

“Surrey’s tree sale program is a great example of how small, individual actions can have a big collective impact,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “By planting and caring for trees, residents are helping to strengthen our natural environment literally in our own backyards. Fall is the perfect time to plant, and I encourage everyone to support our urban forest however they can.”

Since online sales began in 2020, the City has sold more than 18,700 trees, offering a wide variety of trees for purchase. Fruit trees, magnolias, and dogwoods continue to be favourites, while a wide selection of shade trees brings seasonal colour, wildlife habitat, and environmental benefits.

In addition to beautifying our neighbourhoods, trees planted through the sale help manage stormwater, improve air quality, and provide shade. The program plays a key role in the City’s goal of reaching 30 per cent canopy cover by 2038. With 58 per cent of Surrey’s tree canopy on private property, homeowner participation is essential to success.

“Trees are one of the most effective tools we have to combat climate change, cool our neighbourhoods, and support biodiversity,” said Rob Landucci, urban forestry manager. “Over the past 20 years, we’ve planted more than 275,000 trees on public land and continue to add over 15,000 annually through various City programs, including our popular tree sales. While we’re making progress, residents play an important role by planting and caring for trees.”

The final tree sale of the year will take place on Sept. 24.
