Police investigate after Quebec town's web page replaced with Islamist messages

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Jan, 2015 10:52 AM

MONTREAL — Quebec provincial police say they're investigating after a municipality's website appeared to be hacked by someone claiming to be linked to an Islamic extremist group.

The homepage for Terrasse-Vaudreuil, a municipality of less than 2,000 just west of Montreal, appeared to be hacked late Thursday by a group calling itself MECA, which stands for The Middle East Cyber Army.

The web page displayed a message promoting Allah and made reference to the deadly Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris earlier this month.

The city's regular web site was restored early this morning.

A Quebec provincial police spokeswoman says investigators will meet with town staff to gather more information on the incident.

Earlier this month, more than 19,000 French websites were hit by cyberattacks in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack. French officials said MECA was one of the hacker groups behind the cyberattacks.
