Police, Medical Examiner Investigating Hospital Death In Newfoundland

The Canadian Press, 03 May, 2016 12:48 PM
CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Police and the chief medical examiner are investigating a so-called "reportable death" at a hospital in western Newfoundland.

Under the province's Fatalities Investigation Act, reportable deaths involve violence, accident, suicide, improper or negligent treatment.

Deaths are also reportable when the cause is unclear, sudden or unexpected, or occurred when a patient was not under active medical care.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says staff called police Monday morning to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook.

Const. Shawna Park says no other details are being released -- including the patient's age, gender and condition.

A statement from the health authority says only that Western Health is co-operating with the police investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.
