Police Seek Help Identifying Unknown Fire Victim In Surrey

The Canadian Press, 08 Apr, 2017 02:27 PM
Surrey RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person that perished in a shed fire earlier this year in the City Centre area . The victim is believed to be of no fixed address.

On January 29that approximately 7:00am, Surrey RCMP was called to a shed fire on a property in the 10800 block of 132nd Street. Firefighters discovered a body after extinguishing the fire that had fully engulfed the structure. Officers have been unable to identify the victim at this point.

The Surrey RCMP’s General Investigation Unit is leading this investigation with assistance from the BC Coroners Service. The shed was a well-known spot for homeless persons to seek refuge. There is no foul play suspected, however, officers are still trying to identify the deceased person to notify next of kin. The BC Coroners Service has been able to determine the victim was a Caucasian man, approximately 5’6, 140 lbs., and likely in his 20’s or 30’s.

Investigators have exhausted all avenues to identify the victim including dental records, checking missing person reports and canvassing the area, says Corporal Scotty Schumann. Someone somewhere must have a friend or acquaintance that has not been seen for a few months. We would like these people to contact police as soon as possible.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca. Please quote file #2017-12847.
