Quebec police arrests 31 Mafia members in raids

    Thirty one individuals have been arrested following raids that targeted alleged Mafia members in Montreal, Gatineau, Laval and Quebec City. 
     
    Police is saying that they intercepted BlackBerry communications to take down two alleged organized crime groups operating in the province. 
     
    More than one million PIN to PIN messages between members of the Guiseppe De Vito and Bastone brothers Mafia cells were intercepted and analyzed as part of an operation.
     
    "This is the most important interception of its kind in the context of a major investigation in North America," said Insp. Michel Arcand, who runs the organized crime unit for the Mounties in Quebec.
     
    "These two networks operated with the goal of trafficking in drugs, doing business in their respective territories in Montreal" Arcand added.
     
    The accused face more than 80 charges including gangsterism, conspiracy, drug importation, trafficking, possession, kidnapping, forcible confinement, possession of weapons and explosives, arson, extortion and assault.
