Rain Dampens B.C. Coast, But Wildfires Still A Concern In Southern Interior

The Canadian Press, 31 Aug, 2015 11:47 AM
KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A cooler trend across British Columbia hasn't dramatically reduced the number of wildfires.

Provincial information officer Ryan Turcot says six new fires were sparked Sunday, bringing the total number of wildfires to 177 across the province.

He says heavy rain brought relief on the coast and some rain fell in parts of the southern Interior, but that region was also hit by heavy winds.

Evacuation alerts were lifted over the weekend in the Grand Forks and Christina Lake areas although Turcot says the nearby Stickpin wildfire close to the border in Washington state is still uncontrolled.

Canadian crews have been building guards on the northern flank of the 210-square-kilometre fire, but Turcot says units protecting structures are wrapping up and returning to Canada.

Firefighters were also able to fully contain the human-caused Little White Mountain fire, which charred two-square kilometres of bush south of Kelowna.
