RCMP death prompts Edmonton police to question use of officers at bail hearings

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 06 Feb, 2015 02:10 PM

EDMONTON — The fatal shooting of a Mountie by a man who was out on bail has prompted Edmonton police to suggest officers should not be handling bail hearings.

Acting deputy chief Deb Jolly says the death of Const. David Wynn has prompted the force to re-examine the role of police officers in bail hearings before justices of the peace.

She says officers believe decisions about whether to oppose bail should be made by Crown prosecutors.

Wynn was shot and killed and an RCMP police volunteer wounded by a career criminal, who was facing charges but out on bail.

Alberta Justice Minister Jonathan Denis (rhymes with TENNIS) has ordered an investigation into how the Crown handled the case.
