RCMP Not At Fault For Man’s Death After Release From UBC Detachment: Police Watchdog

Darpan News Desk, 20 Feb, 2020 07:08 PM

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent death of a UBC student.

RCMP reported that early on February 5, 2020, a man was arrested and transported to the University RCMP detachment.

At approximately 2:30 am, the man was released and transported by RCMP back to his residence. Just before 5:00 am that morning, a security guard on rounds located the man’s body under the Lions Gate Bridge.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed evidence obtained from cell block video footage, police radio communications and a search of the man’s residence and belongings. The evidence demonstrates that police carried out a lawful investigation, that they were justified in releasing him after the arrest, and that the man’s death did not arise as a consequence of their actions or inactions.

As a result, the investigation has been concluded.
