RCMP say officer shot, seriously injured in Kamloops, B.C

Darpan News Desk, Canadian Press, 03 Dec, 2014 10:45 AM

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The RCMP says one of its officers was shot and seriously injured during a traffic stop in Kamloops, B.C.

Cpl. Cheryl Bush said the Mountie was undergoing surgery.

"An officer was attempting to conduct a traffic stop ... when an exchange of gunfire occurred," said Bush.

Dennis Maruschy, who lives a block-and-a-half from the shooting scene, said he was awakened by the sound of gunfire from the incident, which happened at about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday.

"It sounded like one guy emptying a clip - pop, pop, pop, pop," said Maruschy. "It sounded like someone emptying a clip in a semiautomatic."

"Then we briefly heard sirens, but we did not see lights flashing."

RCMP said the vehicle they were attempting to stop and its occupants have not been located. They said the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

A police news release says RCMP are looking for a white, four-door Chrysler Intrepid with B.C. license plate AF765A attached to it at the time.

Police released few other details early Wednesday, including the gender of the wounded officer.
