RCMP Say They Had To Shoot Polar Bear As It Came Ashore On Fogo Island

The Canadian Press, 03 May, 2016 12:52 PM
FOGO ISLAND, N.L. — RCMP say a warning shot did nothing to scare off a polar bear as it lumbered toward them on Fogo Island before an officer fired into its chest.

Cpl. Shaun Coady says a .308-calibre rifle was used to bring down the fully grown bear as it came out of the water at the fish plant in Deep Bay.

About 25 onlookers had gathered as news of the bear spread through the tiny community.

It's not unusual to see the extremely dangerous predators along Newfoundland and Labrador's eastern coast as they track seals on pack ice in spring.

The bears are part of the Davis Strait population, which is not considered endangered.

Coady says police on Fogo Island don't have access to tranquilizer darts.
