Regina high school exchanges Redmen nickname for Bears after consulting elders

    REGINA — A Regina high school has a new name.

    Starting next year, Balfour Collegiate's sports teams will called the Bears.

    Balfour retired its previous name, the Redmen, after Regina Public Schools decided to make the change after consulting community elders.

    The school's previous name — Redmen — was seen as controversial and inappropriate.

    Principal Corrine Miller says the Redmen name referred to the team colours.

    The school asked students, staff and the community for submissions online.

    Balfour used the Redmen name for decades, but its First Nations headdress logo was phased out in 1995.
