Republican Gov. Chris Christie heads to Calgary to talk energy, Keystone

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 04 Dec, 2014 10:19 AM

CALGARY — A high-profile Republican is in Calgary today to talk energy and pipelines.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is scheduled to meet with Alberta Premier Jim Prentice and give a speech to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

He moves to Ottawa on Friday for a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Christie is expected to focus heavily on North American energy production, including the Keystone XL pipeline, a project of which he is a strong backer.

The governor is considered one of the Republican party's top prospects to make a run for the White House in 2016.

It's his second foreign trip in recent months.

He visited Mexico in September where he preached that the United States foreign policy should start with its neighbours to the north and south.

Christie is not the first presidential prospect to visit Calgary this year.

Hillary Clinton, one of the Democrats' possible contenders, visited the city in March.
