Roads Reopen, Business Resumes In Langley, B.C., Following Ammonia Leak

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Oct, 2018 08:03 PM
LANGLEY, B.C. — All roads have reopened around an industrial park in the Township of Langley, south of Vancouver, almost two days after an ammonia leak forced an evacuation of the area.

RCMP say roads around the industrial park reopened around midnight to allow employees in affected businesses to get back to work.

The area was evacuated early Wednesday when a refrigeration system failed at a dog food manufacturing company in Gloucester Industrial Estates.

Some ammonia leaked, but fire officials in Langley said maintenance contractors had contained the gas by the time firefighters arrived.

Businesses within a 400-metre radius were ordered out as a precaution while the remaining ammonia was removed.

Ammonia is used as a refrigerant and a leak can corrode the skin, eyes and lungs and also cause respiratory failure.
