'Room,' 'sleeping Giant' Win Big At Vancouver Critics Awards

    VANCOUVER — The captivity drama "Room" and the coming-of-age tale "Sleeping Giant" were the big winners at an awards bash hosted Wednesday by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.
     
    An evening gala crowned the Canada-Ireland co-production "Room" best Canadian film and handed best actress honours to U.S. star Brie Larson. The best actor award went to nine-year-old Vancouver resident Jacob Tremblay.
     
    "Room" also won best screenplay for Irish-Canadian writer Emma Donoghue, who adapted the script from her own acclaimed 2010 novel of the same name.
     
    Meanwhile, Andrew Cividino of Dundas, Ont., was named best director of a Canadian film for his debut feature "Sleeping Giant," also picked best first film by a Canadian director. Its star, Nick Serino, won best supporting actor in a Canadian film.
     
    "Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World" was deemed best documentary and best British Columbia film, while Charles Wilkinson won best director of a British Columbia film.
     
    The best supporting actress prize went to Tara Pratt of "No Men Beyond This Point."
