Searchers To Return To Avalanche-Prone Peak Near Vancouver Looking For Snowshoer

  • Searchers To Return To Avalanche-Prone Peak Near Vancouver Looking For Snowshoer

VANCOUVER — Rescuers intend to make another attempt to find a snowshoer who has been missing since an avalanche in the backcountry of Vancouver's North Shore.

North Shore Rescue team leader Mike Danks says in an email that a team is ready to be airlifted at first light into the area around Runner Peak, north of Mount Seymour.

A 39-year-old Surrey man, identified by his mother as Remi Michalowski, has not been seen since Monday morning when an avalanche hit him and a companion as they snowshoed through the steep and challenging area.

The 30-year-old man with Michalowski was able to call for help while clinging to a tree and was airlifted from the area several hours later.

Search efforts were temporarily halted Tuesday as a snowstorm swept across parts of Metro Vancouver, but the weather cleared overnight, although the avalanche danger remains considerable.

Dank has already said that rescuers are hoping for the best but fear the worst because overflights of the avalanche area on Monday found no trace of Michalowski.
